Rhode Island retirement income tax: pensions, Social Security and reporting checks

Rhode Island retirement-income treatment is conditional. State modifications for Social Security and certain pensions or annuities have age, income and income-type requirements; being retired alone does not establish an exclusion.

Does Rhode Island exempt all retirement income?

No blanket exemption follows from being retired. State law starts with federal adjusted gross income and supplies specific modifications. Section (c)(8) addresses taxable Social Security; section (c)(9) addresses certain pension or annuity income. Full-retirement-age and filing-status income conditions matter.

The law provides annual adjustment of the referenced income limits. Use the filing year’s instructions rather than copying the unadjusted dollar amounts in the statute. Ask separately how each pension, annuity, IRA or other distribution is classified; this page does not decide which payment qualifies.

A publication date is not the return year

The publications index lists Publication 2026-01. Its February 2026 cover identifies Tax Year 2025. Select the guide and return instructions for the year you are filing; the number 2026 in a publication title does not certify every 2026-return condition.

For a joint return, collect both people’s benefit and plan records. Ask the preparer to identify the qualifying income and conditions for each person, rather than assuming a single household pension total establishes the modification.

Separate state modifications from federal benefit tax

A Rhode Island subtraction does not decide federal reporting. Pension/annuity taxation and Social Security taxation use different federal rules. A federal taxable benefit can require a state modification check; it is not automatically exempt or automatically taxed unchanged by the state.

Request a separate review for an inherited account, unusual withdrawal or move across state lines. Keep personal tax documents out of an initial directory inquiry.

Bring a payer-by-payer records list

Group each plan or benefit separately before requesting preparation or review. A summary lets a professional price the work without receiving identity documents in an initial directory inquiry.

  • 1099-R statements, corrected forms, SSA-1099 and any railroad benefit statements.
  • Plan type, retirement/separation dates, contribution history and prior state adjustments.
  • Withdrawal, transfer, inherited-account or conversion records, with dates and the payer’s description.
  • Residence/move dates, other income and withholding; ask who handles federal, state and any separate local questions.

Ask a professional about your situation

Ask about the particular plan, distribution, residence history and federal/state returns. Separate unusual-payment review and notice work in the quote. Directory listings do not certify retirement-income specialists or determine eligibility.

Compare professional qualifications and questions to ask. Keep personal tax documents private; this directory does not receive returns, identity documents or portal credentials.
